TOPAC LAUNCHES FOUR-CITY ROAD SHOW

Last night in Toronto, Tour Operators Promoting Africa in Canada (TOPAC) greeted a packed audience of travel agents and guests in the first stop on a four-city tour. Following the mini-fair of Canadian tour operators offering African product, Sarah Fazendin, North American Marketing Manager for Kenya, described the “original and best safari destination.” She advised agents to consider several questions when helping clients to plan their African adventure: How long and how far; travel alone or join a group; what kind of accommodation – bush camp to luxury resort; and how will clients get around – by air or cross-country.

Shekhar Ramamoorthy, Area Manager Eastern Canada for Kenya Airways outlined service in and around Africa
Alex Tunoi, Asst. Regional Manager for the Kenya Tourism Board based in Nairobi, provided an overview of Kenya’s different regions and 38 parks, including a new marine park. Tunoi later said that one of his main objectives in coming to Canada to be part of the tour was to hear directly from travel agents. He wants to learn first hand about “the challenges they’re facing and what they would like to see us do.” Shekkar Ramamoorthy, Area Manager Eastern Canada for Kenya Airways outlined service in and around Africa. For North American passengers the airline partners with Air Canada connecting through London and Amsterdam and using Nairobi as a hub to serve 24 cities on the continent. Kenya Airways also flies to such destinations as Dubai and Bangkok, for clients interested in a combination tour, and has just signed a deal to add stops in China including Shang-hai.
Ramamoorthy urged agents to consider upselling to business class with amenities like 180-degree flat beds and Internet access. Kenya Airways has Canadian offices in Toronto and Vancouver. The TOPAC tour, which wraps up with a bush barbecue, visits Ottawa today, Calgary on Wednesday and Edmonton on Thursday. For information log on to www.topac.org.
