Tour Operators Promoting Africa in Canada (TOPAC) are inviting all to “Tee Off for Tiny Tots”, at their July 20th Caledon Golf & Country Club fundraise

TOPAC member Marianne Schaubeck, from Reservations Africa, helps run the African Preschools Society, a charity sending 100% of monies raised from the event to a small rural South African school outside Kruger National Park. The charity built the school on land donated by the village chief, using local labor and resources. The African Preschools Society is a personal passion and a matter of principle for Marianne Schaubeck. “You can’t make a living from a developing world destination and not give back,” she explains, “and the fact that TOPAC got behind this cause is great. I’m proud to be a member.”

TOPAC, an association uniting Canadian tour operators and wholesalers for African Travel, was formed in 2002 to bring African travel to the forefront of Canadian’s minds.

TOPAC members are African Experts by Goway, GAP Adventures, Lion World Travel, Reservations Africa, Tourcan Vacations, Travel Studio, Trek Holidays and Wild Africa Safaris.

The group of eight competitors realized the need to collaborate on initiatives to educate the industry and the public on the diversity of social, cultural and geographical experiences available throughout the African continent. The benefits of a cooperative effort would clearly support the growth of all their businesses and was crucial to the strategic marketing of an entire continent.

“We got together to help make Africa more visible and top of mind beyond the typical sun destination or the typical notion of doing an animal safari,” explains vice-chair Phillip Solomon, Manager Sales & Marketing, Travel Studio. “We partner with a Tourism Authority to reach and expand their market by doing compelling consumer and trade presentations that provide an educational service.“

The first round of seminars stretched from Halifax to Victoria and began with a memorandum of understanding with South Africa to develop a marketing agreement for seminars, promotional incentives, and advertising campaigns jointly funded by TOPAC and the S.A Tourism Authority. Presentations highlighting Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, Zambia, Zanzibar, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia soon followed.

“The challenge is to get creative with these events and give people who go to a lot of presentations a fresh experience,” says chair Chris Ronneseth, Sales Manager Trek Holidays. “So we’re always changing our format. We’re planning a bush barbecue event at a hotel, in the fall. We also want to give the Country hosting the event the most bang for their buck.”
